Army band is taking the fight to locals

THE Bundaberg Municipal Band has entertained the region since 1933.

Now, the historic group faces the threat of disbanding unless enough money can be raised to move its band hall to a better location.

To that end, the Australian Army Band Corps will be performing a free concert at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre at 7pm on Friday.

People will be asked to donate gold coins and raffles will support the Save Our Band campaign.

One past member of the municipal band who will be appearing in the concert is Corporal Tim McCabe, now posted to the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

“I first started playing french horn while I was a school student in Bundaberg before attending the Queensland Conservatorium,” Cpl McCabe said.

During this time he also completed his basic military training at Kapooka and joined the Queensland University Regiment Band based at Enoggera.

Cpl McCabe then transferred to the regular Australian Army Band and has been posted to Kapooka, Sydney and Hobart.

He is currently based at the Band of the Royal Military College in Duntroon, Canberra, and also plays with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

“The Australian Army Band has provided me with many travel opportunities,” he said.

“Overseas visits include entertaining troops in the Sinai, Afghanistan and United Arab Emirates.

“I have also represented the Australian Army at the Anzac Day Service at Anzac Cove, the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland and Japanese Self Defence Force Marching Festival in Tokyo, Japan.”
