Are direct NZ flights still in sight for Mackay?

A KEY figure behind the push for the first direct international flights out of Mackay has resigned.

But Mackay Airport and helloworld will continue pushing to secure direct flights to New Zealand from Mackay.

Steven Boxall, formerly helloworld Mackay and Mount Pleasant general manager, left recently after a decade with the business.

Mackay Airport and Helloworld have been jointly negotiating to get flights taking off for New Zealand between June and August - the peak winter season.

With any luck, Mackay residents could soon jet off directly to New Zealand to explore destinations such as Milford Sound on the South Island.

A spokeswoman for the airport said Monday, "We are continuing to liase with potential airlines to secure aircraft to operate these flights”.

"Our strong partnership with helloworld Mackay continues under the new leadership of Mark Walter.

"We have worked closely with the helloworld team for the past couple of years on this project and in March 2016 our two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

"Together we continue to monitor demand for New Zealand services, which consistently show a high rate of popularity among locals.”

helloworld has been contacted for comment.
