Archie's our little big chop

IN THE time it takes most of us to make a cup of tea, Archie Head can chop through a log bigger than he is.

The six-year-old wood chopper from Burpengary will showcase his talents to the nation in the return of Little Big Shots.

Channel 7's family entertainment show, hosted by funny man Shane Jacobson, is purely about celebrating talented children aged three and up. There are no judges, scores or prizes.

"We got on to it through the Queensland Axemen's Association," Archie's mum Katrina Head told the Daily.

"We put Archie's name forward and he did his thing. I don't think we would have broached it if it had been a competition-style show."

The cameras and studio audience didn't phase Archie, who was aged five at the time of filming. He is used to competing against kids twice his age in front of large crowds at events including the Nambour Show.

Archie hopes to beat his personal best time of one minute and 28 seconds on the show.

"It's really fun to chop the block in two," he said.

Wood chopping is a family sport, which Archie's parents and two siblings also enjoy.

"Archie's actually a fifth generation wood chopper on his dad's side," Ms Head said.

"The kids have definitely grown up around it, but it's never been pushed upon them. Each of them have picked up an axe and decided to do it on their own. We do allow our kids to play with sharp axes, but our talks start at a very young age to be respectful and have a lot of common sense around the gear."

Little Big Shots premieres tomorrow5 at 7pm on Channel 7.
