Annual three-day trek in the hinterland is on again

WHAT better way to experience spring on the Sunshine Coast than to go for a hike.

The Great Noosa Trail Walk from October 1-3 is a 60km trek through the hills and forests of the Noosa hinterland using the trail network maintained by Noosa Shire Council.

Starting at Lake Macdonald, Cooroy, about 150 walkers of all ages and abilities will walk across farmland, forest tracks and country roads, camping overnight at the hinterland villages of Kin Kin (night 1) and Cooran (night 2).

The walk will conclude on Day 3 at Pomona.

Organiser Shaun Walsh sees this event as much more than just a "walk”.

Shaun is passionate about introducing walkers to the cultural and environmental landscape of the region in which he lives.

Those joining the three-day trek will enjoy a full cultural experience with art shows planned at three locations, music from Sunshine Coast talent, meals prepared from regional produce served by local businesses and community groups, massage, yoga, and even a night watching the NRL footy final with one of the area's football clubs.

The event is not-for-profit, and Shaun estimates it conservatively adds $40,000 to the coffers of small businesses and community groups in Noosa's hinterland villages.

Volunteer trail guides with a wealth of experience will accompany the walkers.

Each participant is encouraged to take their time and do the walk at their own pace.

It is supposed to be a challenge, but no pressure is put on anyone to complete the entire day's trek.

"Bail out” points are available along the route, providing transport to that day's destination.

With the full support of the volunteer guides, walkers are encouraged to tailor the experience to suit their own abilities and interests.

One of our aims is to use the walk to bring attention to the beauty and accessibility of the Great Noosa Trail network for walkers of all ages and abilities.

While this trek takes place every year on the October long weekend, the Great Noosa Trail is open every day and is free for everyone to enjoy.
