IN light of the executions of Bali 9 members Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran, Amnesty Byron Bay will hold a Candlelight Vigil Against the Death Penalty today at 5pm at Apex Park opposite Beach Hotel.

In the early hours of this morning eight men, including the two Australians were killed by the Indonesian government in a "cruel and callous manner" Amnesty Byron Bay Convenor, Cate Coorey said.

"We reject this senseless killing and ask you to join us to commemorate the lives lost and to show that compassionate Australians reject the death penalty and will continue to fight against it," Ms Coorey said. 

"The families of these dead men should know that their sons' deaths will not be in vain - we will continue to fight to make the death penalty history.

"The death penalty has been proven not to work in deterring crime. It is a cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and it has no place in today's justice system.

"The Byron Bay Amnesty group is part of the worldwide Amnesty International movement that opposes the death penalty in any circumstance, for any person."
