Amazing winner at Ipswich Showgrounds
EVERY now and then you see a race performance which creates an indelible memory.
It doesn't have to be a champion like Winx either.
Last Tuesday a greyhound named Queen Werina whizzed around the Ipswich Showgrounds circuit for a nine-lengths win.
Anyone who was at the track or watching on Sky won't forget the performance in a big hurry.
The race was a 431 metres maiden final.
The Noel Evans trained bitch had won her heat the previous week from box three in 25.65, which you would class as an average time.
Then on Tuesday, the daughter of Keybow and Slip Sliding pinged out of box two to score in a sizzling 24.77.
Thagoona based Evans trained the dam, Slip Sliding, who won two races, both at Ipswich over 520 metres.
The 431 metres maiden class record stands to Over Here, trained by the late Peter Ruetschi, with a time of 24.74.
The track record is Bubble Guppy at 24.57.
You don't see a winning margin of nine lengths posted very often over a short distance such as 431 metres.
Queen Werina ran second at her first three starts before her maiden heat and final wins.
Watch out for her in a novice race next start, possibly next Tuesday.
Trainer's winning treble
CHURCHABLE-based Mal Cuneo was the star trainer of Ipswich racing this past week, with three wins.
Jim Heddles, from Mansfield, in Brisbane landed a double.
Cuneo has weight of numbers on his side this weekend. He has three runners at today's twilight meeting and six runners tomorrow night.
Heddles only runner is Alpha Ulysses tomorrow night.
Terrific competition at Ekka
THERE'S a greyhound competition at the Brisbane Show, or "the Ekka'', again this year. It's been running for about 10 years.
There are various classes, ranging from pups aged between six and 18 months to veterans six years and older.
It's a great opportunity for people who are passionate about their racing and retired greyhounds to show to the general public what beautiful animals greyhounds are.
In particular their friendly nature can be showcased to the public.
Entries close next Friday, July 6.
The date of the competition is Sunday, August 12.

Auction deadline
ANOTHER deadline to note is tomorrow.
Entries are called for the Ipswich Magical Puppy Auction, to be held at the Showgrounds on Sunday, August 26.
Pups which go through the auction are eligible for two feature races in 2020.
That might sound a long time ahead, and it is.
But the whole process starts with the auction of the young pups.
