Almost 100 residents and 21 businesses bankrupt: report

ONE in every 875 Mackay residents is going bankrupt according to new figures.

Mackay also has some of the highest number of business-related personal insolvencies in the state - 21 - according to the data.

It's followed by Ormeau-Oxenford (20 debtors) and Townsville (18 debtors), compared to the number of debtors who entered a business bankruptcy in Greater Brisbane, which increased 4.5% in the September quarter.

The Australian Financial Security Authority statistics also revealed Mackay had 96 insolvencies, up from 91 in the June 2016 quarter.

Townsville was much worse than Mackay though, with a whopping 131 debtors.

Regions with the highest number of debtors in the September quarter were:

Townsville (131 debtors)

Ormeau-Oxenford (99 debtors)

Mackay (96 debtors)

They had higher proportions of debtors in the adult population than the rest of Queensland average in the September quarter 2016, the report shows.

Despite the statistics, a massive hike in the price of coal in recent months has meant more work for Mackay mining services businesses such as Mackay Signs and Stickers in Paget.

New businesses have also opened in the region including Paddock to Plate, Timezone, Burger Urge, Church Cafe, Rivers and McDonald's Ooralea.

Mackay also has a strong chance of becoming the headquarters of mining giant Adani.
