Matthews joins move for change

AFL: Brisbane Lions three-time premiership winning coach Leigh Matthews could be headed back to the club, as football director.

Matthews has added his name to a ticket that includes club directors Paul Williams and Mick Power, the group aiming to topple chairman Angus Johnson who was heavily criticised last week for the way he handled the sacking of coach and Lions' favourite son Michael Voss.

Williams and Power both spoke at the conclusion of a board meeting yesterday, where the main agenda item was the appointment of a selection panel to find a replacement for Voss.

The pair failed in their bid to force Johnson to step down, and also to secure the resignations of fellow board members Linda Nash and Cameron Milner.

Matthews has been approached several times in recent years to return to the club in a key role, but has refused until the dramatic events of last week.

After the failed coup, Johnson issued a statement on behalf of the board saying neither he nor the targeted directors would stand down.

The Williams-Power ticket will now seek to call an extraordinary general meeting to take control of the board.
