Actor Peter O'Toole dies at age 81

THE actor Peter O'Toole has died aged 81, his agent confirmed.

Shooting to fame in Sir David Lean's 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia, the star went on to earn eight Oscar nominations - the most anyone has ever received without winning an Academy Award.

An acclaimed leading man, the Irish-born star began his career on the stage in Bristol and London at the age of just 17.

Though his career was marred by repeated health problems, O'Toole went on to receive honorary Academy recognition for his work in 2003.

His agent, Steve Kenis, said he died yesterday at the Wellington hospital in London after a long illness.
