Acoustic finger-style guitarists to play beautiful music
LOVERS of acoustic guitar will be in their element when two of the world's top finger-style guitarists - the United Kingdom's Andrew White and Australia's own Owen Van Larkins - perform together.
The master and his former protege will bring their beautiful music to Eudlo Hall on Saturday, September 23, as part of a special, six-date east coast tour.
An acoustic guitar veteran and finger-style master, White is signed to the genre's leading label, Candyrat Records.
The singer-songwriter has released 14 albums in his 40 years as a professional musician, one of which hit the top 30 on the US Billboard Charts.
Van Larkins, who is undertaking a Diploma of Music from the University of the Sunshine Coast, is spearheading the Australian finger-style revolution with his ground-breaking techniques and complex compositions.
A one-man band, Van Larkins doesn't sing, play drums or use a loop pedal because he can make his acoustic guitar do it all.
His finger-style journey began in 2011 with his teacher Rod Vervest at Denmark TAFE in Western Australia.
A year later, he was accepted into Brisbane TAFE where he first heard White's album Guitara Celtica.
These two virtuosos met when a very green Van Larkins asked his guitar idol to listen to some demos that his music had inspired.
"Andrew's music inspired me to try my hand at composing, so I quite brazenly sent him the demos and asked him to produce my first album,” Van Larkins said.
"I was speechless when White said yes.”
The now Brisbane-based artist has earned a coveted spot on the US Candyrat Records roster, has featured in the world's first finger-style movie and gained praise from the world's greats including the Coast's own Phil Emmanuel.
And White has only praise for the younger musician now: "When Van Larkins came to me, I was the master and he was the disciple, but what I see him do now makes me feel like the grasshopper with master Po.”
Ten years since that first meeting, with hundreds of thousands of YouTube views between them, the two are re-uniting to showcase their respective new albums Beautiful Trouble (White) and Cinder Moon (Van Larkins) on this latest tour.
The Acoustic Masters Tour featuring Andrew White and Van Larkins comes to Eudlo Hall on Saturday, September 23, at 7pm. Tickets are $25. Go to https://vanlarkins.com/event/2021159/453506476/acoustic-masters-series
