ACCC warns Tweed business

A TWEED Heads workplace safety business owner has rejected claims by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission her company engaged in "harassment, coercion and misleading or deceptive conduct".

The ACCC issued a warning regarding the conduct of Safety Compliance Pty Ltd.

"The notices allege that Safety Compliance made misrepresentations about occupational health and safety requirements and engaged in harassment, coercion and misleading or deceptive conduct," the ACCC said in a statement.

Safety Compliance director Fiona Schimmel denied the allegations.

"We definitely refute the claims," Ms Schimmel said.

"All we have been doing is trying to reduce workplace accidents."

Ms Schimmel said she appeared before a hearing in Sydney three months ago, but there had been no contact with the commission since.

"I was never advised of any outcome," she said.

"I asked them at the time if I am doing something wrong then tell me."

An ACCC spokesman said it was the second public alert the commission has made since it was given the power 18 months ago.

"We had formally contacted the business a number of times," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said the ACCC would make public alerts where it was in the public's interest.
