Abood to swim for Olympic shot

POTTSVILLE'S Matthew Abood is philosophical about his chances of qualifying for the London Olympics after qualifying eighth for tonight's 100m freestyle final at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide.

Abood yesterday finished fourth in the second semi-final won by Magnussen, just sneaking into the final after clocking a solid 49.32 seconds.

The first two home in the final will swim in the individual event in London, but the next four swimmers home will become members of the 4x100m relay squad.

Abood told his mum Jill, who is over in Adelaide watching the action with husband Tony, that he was "delighted to be in the mix" for medals and a place on the Australian Olympic team.

"He said that he had swum a few good races from outside lanes in the past and was happy be out of sight and out of mind away from the action in the centre lanes," Mrs Abood said.

Matthew's youngster brother Andrew, although disappointed by not qualifying for the final, was thrilled by clocking a personal best 50.03 seconds in his semi-final.

The time was the 12th fastest of the 16 semi-finalists.

Defending champion Magnussen will start as raging hot favourite to retain his crown after clocking a sizzling 47.93 secs despite "cruising" over the final 25m.

Both Aboods will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for the heats of the 50m freestyle.
