THE Federal Government has reassured Australian cattle producers that dwindling exports to Indonesia are unlikely to continue.

Live export orders to the south-east Asian nation have dropped to just 50,000 head during July to September, down from 250,000 over the previous quarter.

In a radio interview on Wednesday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it was a "one-off reduction".

"It's a bit of a worry, but Indonesia is certainly not the only market," he said.

However, Indonesian Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel said the quota could drop even lower or increase to 200,000 as the country pursued its target of supplying 80% of its market domestically.

Indonesia is Australia's biggest recipient of live beef exports. It took 730,257 head, or 56% of the export total market, last year. Vietnam was the second biggest market, with 181,542 head.
