Abbott calls Indonesia to appeal for clemency for Bali Nine
PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has spoken to Indonesia's president overnight to appeal for clemency for two convicted drug smugglers on death row.
Mr Abbott made a phone call to Joko Widodo last night, passing on his hope the executions of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran would not proceed, given their rehabilitation in their time in prison in Bali.
While the fate of the two men has caused friction between Australia and Indonesia, the ABC understands both leaders expressed commitment to the bilateral relationship in the phone call.
Mr Widodo has also spoken to the leaders of France, Brazil and the Netherlands in recent days about their nationals also awaiting execution.
Following those phone calls, he said Indonesia would not tolerate interference from other countries when it came to law enforcement.
