A woman's InnerSense

THE ladies of Coolum were calling the shots in a photography exhibition, launched at the Business Women's Network breakfast on March 8.

The 13 participating women directed their own photos and wrote captions to represent their identity, shying away from labels such as their job titles.

Project co-ordinator Julia Loaney said the women got to direct their own photos and write the captions, allowing them to define their own identities.

"It wasn't headshots of 13women posed in make- up shots," Ms Loaney said.

"We had them asking: 'Well, who am I?'"

Participant Sharon Grimley said the project went as she had hoped.

"I was really, really happy with the result," Ms Grimley said.

Now, however, I understand that a work of substance is built not on a blank canvas, but on marks and layers already laid down. Who I am now is the result of all that has gone before, and forms the foundation for all I will become... and so I add more layers...

"It's what I wanted."

Photographer John Dumble said the project helped him understand the complexities of women.
