Jess shares her culture through song at Musica!

JESS Johnson will showcase the Gooreng Gooreng culture at this year's Musica!

The Gladstone born woman has sung since she was a child, when she performed while at church with her family.

Since then, Ms Johnson has performed with the likes of X Factor's Rochelle Pitt and James Morrison, and now her focus has turned to Gladstone.

She will offer a musical workshop, highlighting her culture, to youth of Gladstone at the October event.

"I'm just excited about being given the opportunity to perform on a stage like this," she said.

Her musical journey has seen her travel to Brisbane, Canberra, Townsville and other regions in Australia.

Ms Johnson moved from Gladstone to Brisbane to pursue her music career in the '90s.

"My first performance was for the homeless at the River Stage, my aunty had organised the show, it was amazing," she said.

While she had many successes, having a family brought her back to her home town.

Now with six kids, she said a highlight of her career was performing in the Gladstone musical, Boomtown, where she met James Morrison.

In the production, Ms Johnson sang a song written by her aunty in the Gooreng Gooreng language.

"It's all part of trying to revive our language.

"I'm proud to be able to share my language that I've been taught through something I love, which is singing.

"I want to slowly revive my culture that my forefathers have lost.

"I can teach the next generation what I have and am still learning," she said.

While she will be hosting workshops, Ms Johnson looks forward to the lessons she will learn from being surrounded by talented musicians.

Ms Johnson said her musical dream would be to one day release her own CD.
