A time to thank top citizens

CITIZENS of all ages turned out at Gympie Civic Centre yesterday to congratulate Gympie's Senior Citizens of the Year, Maureen Maguire and Rex Hoffman.

More than 100 people attended Prospectors Hall for a concert presented by school children, parents, historical re-enactment enthusiasts and others.

Deputy Mayor Tony Perrett showed a robust sense of humour when he was "arrested" for the offence of imposing excessive costs on landowners through an institution known as "rates".

As depicted in today's Behind the Mullock Heap column, Cr Perrett was charged, tried in an instant "kangaroo court" and sentenced to not-so-hard-hard labour, presenting the two winners with their awards.

The presentation was one of the highlights of Gympie and District Seniors Week celebrations.

The celebrations included performances by Judy Thomas and Piano Plus, the Gympie School of Highland Dancing, St Pat's Primary School Choir, the Senior Citizens Club, St Pat's Rhythm and Groovers, Gympie School of Highland Dancing, Gympie Central School Junior and Senior Choirs and the Gympie Historical Re-enactment Association.

Cr Perrett apologised for Mayor Ron Dyne, who had been called to attend a meeting in Brisbane.

"As you are all no doubt aware, each year two awards are presented to worthy recipients, in recognition of the contributions they have made and continue to make to the Gympie Region," he said.

He said nominations had been few but deserving.

They were Bobbie Wessling, Maureen Maguire, Elaine Thomson, Carol Nugent, Rex Hoffman and Geoff Garratt.

Mareen Maguire's community work includes volunteering with Meals on Wheels, the Senior Citizens Centre Management Committee, Cystic Fibrosis, Gympie and District Aged Care, the Community Bus and school P and Cs.

Rex Hoffman has been involved with Meals on Wheels for many years delivering meals and keeping the gardens maintained.
