A more exciting, truthful reality is all around us
REALITY television exploded in the last decade and somehow it seems to be sticking around.
From watching advertisements recently, it seems even more shows are making the rounds, although maybe I only notice this because I find most of them irritating.
I honestly thought this type of TV would dwindle out of popularity.
However, I admit I've watched reality shows before with enjoyment, and I know that others do too in the dark of their own bedrooms (you know who you are).
I suppose the attraction comes from the reality aspect, although we all know that these shows are anything but real.
What we see is an abbreviated version, where cameras shoot hours of footage, cut out boring parts to make an interesting story and character types.
No one wants happiness or normalcy (well, I do), that's boring and not cathartic.
If the ratings are sucking, add celebrity guests or attractive newcomers.
I think that's one of the funniest things about producers trying to portray real life - have you ever seen an unattractive reality TV star?
Even though I'm not going to be a regular watcher if I'm bored in a hotel room, like I was this week, I may just watch another episode of Channel Nine's new hit When Love Comes to Town- at least a show on the premise of finding love isn't going to hurt anyone (too much).
Reality TV can be vulgar and shoddy, but it can also just be harmless fun.
Although it is intrinsically fascinating to see how people speak and behave in unusual situations, I think it's important to remember a more exciting reality is all around us.
It's at our fingertips and before our eyes.
Reality is what we make of it.
