A lesson in safety for young drivers

THE days, weeks and months after passing a driving test are often accompanied by a feeling of euphoria and a sense of invincibility.

That excitement can come to a screeching halt, however, if a driver makes just a simple mistake.

On October 20, 120 Year 11 students from Coolum State School attended a RYDA day at the House With No Steps organised by the Rotary Club of Noosa.

Club president Tess Alexandroff said the free session was not about teaching students to drive, but instead instilled responsibilities, awareness and impact of drivers' actions.

"It's amazing how many times the kids come up and say it was so good, and they learned things they'd never think about,” she said.

"When a young person is an L-plater and driving with an adult, the accident rate is practically zero but when they can go out by themselves, the statistics are very high for (accidents) between the ages of 18 and 25.

"The are very blase about safety and I think a lot of them don't think about the consequences of what they do.

"If we can save just one life with this program, it has all been worthwhile.”
