Mal Jonson

A FISHING rod was the first thing truck driver Mal Jonson brought along when sent to Cooktown.

Mal drives a 2008 model Isuzu truck for Hart Transport based at Mackay and was heading for Cooktown when Big Rigs spotted him on Easter Monday.

A friendly 59-year-old, Mal was armed with a trusty fishing rod and tackle box as he walked back to his light rig parked beside the Choice Roadhouse next to the Bruce Highway.

"I have been doing a spot of fishing from the Cardwell jetty but didn't catch anything. But I reckon I'll have more luck in Cooktown as I'm told the fishing there is the best in Australia," he said.

On the back of the Isuzu were a compressor and other gear which will be used for work on a new Cooktown bridge.

"I have brought it up from Slade Point at Mackay," he said.
