Jamie Hill

FISHING is one of the favourite recreations many truckies enjoy while not on the highway.

Jamie Hill from Townsville would be the envy of many. Friendly Jamie works for John Friend Constructions on Palm Island and drives a Mazda T2000.

"I carry gear and tools and the views as you drive around are sensational. They are the best in Australia," he said.

Jamie and his fellow workmates live in dongas in a Palm Island suburb, Butler Bay, which is right near the sea.

"On my days off I go fishing in a Haines Hunter or a tinnie and catch coral trout, sweetlip, mackerel and other species. But you wouldn't swim here as there are huge tiger sharks," Jamie said.

Your writer was taken for a drive in the Mazda as Jamie picked up some gear and noticed a crocodile warning sign near his donga.

"I haven't spotted any crocs here but did when I worked up the Gulf," he said.

Jamie said his mum would be proud to see his picture in Big Rigs as she works at a roadhouse on the Atherton Tablelands at Millaa Millaa.

Palm Island is 48 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean from Townsville. It is the largest island in the great Palm group and its waters abound with fish.
