Senior Malaysian politicians may defect over Govt 'theft'

SEVERAL senior members of Malaysia's ruling Umno party are reportedly contemplating defection to the Opposition in the wake of the US government's move to seize $1.3 billion in assets allegedly stolen from state firm 1MDB.

While Prime Minister Najib Razak was not named in a civil lawsuit brought by the US Department of Justice, it referred to the transfer of $912 million from 1MDB to the bank account of "Malaysian Official 1".

The PM created and oversaw the taxpayer-funded company, and his stepson and a close business associate were named in the lawsuit.
