Gladstone ready for digital TV
PEOPLE in Gladstone have embraced digital television with 89% of households already converted.
The region has jumped onto the new system more readily than most other parts of regional Queensland and Nerida O'Loughlin, head of the Digital Switchover task force, said it could be because so many people were eager to view the digital channels available.
"Gladstone is ahead of the regional Queensland average," Ms O'Loughlin said.
"Some areas are quicker to convert because they want those extra channels."
The regional Queensland switchover is scheduled for December 6 and Ms O'Loughlin said she wasn't concerned about the remaining 11% yet to convert.
"There is a high level of awareness about the switchover," she said.
"But I suppose it's always a bit of a shock when they hear that on December 6 they'll lose TV if they don't have the set top box."
Ms O'Loughlin said those who hadn't yet made the switch from analogue may have found it difficult financially and should contact Centrelink to sign up to the Household Assistance Scheme. The scheme offers support to people who receive the maximum rate of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment, Department of Veterans' Affairs Service Pension or Income Support Supplement, own a working TV and did not have access to digital TV.
"They're probably the ones who haven't switched over yet," Ms O'Loughlin said.
"They should get in touch with Centrelink and sign up to the scheme."
