52 TONNES: Warwick's Rubbish Rambler cleans up

THIS year alone Leonard Monaghan, affectionately known around Warwick as the Rubbish Rambler, has collected almost 3.2tonnes of rubbish from region's roads.

On Monday he reached the milestone of 52tonnes of rubbish picked up from the area since he began in 2008.

Last Tuesday, near the Eight Mile, he had his biggest day ever by far, collecting 132 kilograms of rubbish.

"I'm surprised my trolley survived,” he said.

"A lot of the stuff I pick up is from people driving around with unsecured loads, some is just litter and others are things people don't want to pay dumping fees for like tyres and fridges.”

Mr Monaghan said by recycling whatever he could and donating aluminium cans to East School he was trying to do his bit.

But when you're walking the roads of the Southern Downs every day picking up rubbish that others leave behind, occasionally you're bound to find some unusual things.

This week, Mr Monaghan found a plastic bag near the Caltex stuffed with lesbian erotica. Something he said was not really his cup of tea.

"No, that went straight into the recycling,” he said.

Aside from that, Mr Monaghan is mystified by the amount of white goods he comes across in his travels.

"TVs, microwaves, fridges, stove tops, fans, washing machines, you name it,” he said.

"Once I found a large cardboard box for a 63-inch TV, inside it was the remote.

"I found it quite amusing that you'd buy a thousand dollar TV and throw away the remote.”
