34 run weekend: That's pretty good going
IT was a series clean sweep the Ipswich Musketeers needed to keep in touch with the competition leaders.
However, beating Rangers 12-4 yesterday and 22-0 on Friday night provided even more encouraging signs.
Ipswich's latest American baseball import Tanner Donnels was among the Musketeers batters who went on a hitting spree.
Donnels batted at four and made his debut in the outfield before the mercy rule was applied after seven innings.
"He's got a real nice swing,'' Musketeers president Jon Campbell said.
The Musketeers batters launched into the game with six runs in each of the first two innings before building their commanding win.
Dave Pearson had four hits with a three-run home run after Wade Dutton produced a home run in the first dig.
With a testing Baseball Queensland Division 1 series against Windsor next weekend, Campbell was keen to see his team firing, even against weaker opposition.
"We could have won by more but they (Rangers) are just struggling with their pitching,'' Campbell said.
However, there were no such worries for Ipswich with ever-reliable Dean Jones shutting down the Rangers batters during his 85 pitches.
Yesterday, Musketeers pitchers Dan Butcher (six innings) and player/coach Brad Dutton (three) completed the victory after Ipswich built an 8-0 lead.
"We knew, with a team that we've got, you want to go into these games and really push yourself to get the double W (wins), which we did so it's nice,'' Dutton said.
The next trip to Windsor will give the Musketeers a better guide to where they are in this year's league.
"They've got some Bandits (national league) pitchers that are going to face us, so it will be a good challenge for us,'' Dutton said.
