A NEW pathway through the Baldwin Swamp Environmental Reserve worth $1.8 million will get the go-ahead thanks to $739,900 of State Government funding.

The council's Sport and Recreation spokesman Cr David Batt has welcomed the windfall, saying the project would provide a key pathway for pedestrians and cyclists between existing and future development on the eastern side of the city and the Bundaberg CBD.

"It will link existing pathways within the Baldwin Swamp area with pathways along the Bundaberg Ring Road," he said.

"The Bundaberg Region lends itself perfectly to recreational walkways and bikeways and this funding will enable these activities to be developed in what is a very desirable location close to heavily populated areas of Bundaberg."

The funding was announced by State Treasurer Curtis Pitt during his visit to Bundaberg last week.

The funds were allocated through the Government's Get Playing Plus program, designed to boost sport and recreation opportunities to Queenslanders, and the announcement also included $596,596 dollars to upgrade lighting on sporting fields at Monto, Gayndah and Mundubbera, projects which will cost $900,000 in total.

Cr Batt said the cycleway funding had been supplied in response to a grant application submitted by Bundaberg Regional Council.

The project will involve the construction of almost 1.3 kilometres of footpath, the installation of solar lighting, a road crossing and the construction of a timber boardwalk.

The work is expected to commence in the second half of the 2016/17 financial year.

Bundaberg MP Leanne Donaldson said she was thrilled to see Bundaberg and North Burnett councils getting state support for sports infrastructure.

"I am a passionate advocate of giving locals even more reasons to get outside and make the most of our enviable weather and lifestyle," she said.

"In this instance there's a double benefit, in terms of the employment opportunities when these projects get off the ground.

"The Treasurer dedicated much of his speech today at the Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast to outlining our efforts to arrest the youth unemployment rate in this region and this is yet another practical, grassroots initiative where the state is stepping in to help."
