IT HAS been 130 years since the opening of the Tenterfield Railway Station, and to celebrate this important milestone, the railway museum will host an open day this Saturday.

The station was first opened on October 19, 1886 and was the last NSW station built on the Great Northern Line.

It is described as a "superb example of Victorian Gothic architecture", having been designed by the "father of NSW railways", John Whitton.

The Tenterfield Railway Museum's website explains: "Ironically the station's service came to an end 100 years after the then Premier of NSW, Sir Henry Parkes, arrived by train to make his famous Federation Speech in Tenterfield, which set in motion the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia.

"Today many of the original facilities are still in working condition allowing the station to transform itself into an outstanding railway museum with a well preserved collection of railway artefacts."

To celebrate the station's 130th anniversary, an open day will be held, kicking off at 9.30am with the official opening of a new trike shed by Lismore MP Thomas George.

There will also be free entry to the museum to see the new exhibits and improvements, birthday cake, activities for the kids and much more.
