Severe weather warning issued

Tags: bureau of meteorology, severe weather warning

A SEVERE weather warning has been issued for parts of the Wide Bay-Burnett, South-East Coast and Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the warning at 4.55am today, due to an upper trough over the southern interior of Queensland which is expected to intensify as it moves slowly west during today and tomorrow.

Heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding is expected in areas south-east of Bundaberg to Goondiwindi today, initially developing on the coast and then spreading inland.

Twenty-four-hour rainfall totals in excess of 150mm are possible, but locations affected are expected to be south of Bundaberg, including Hervey Bay, Gympie, Toowoomba, the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast.

The trough causing the rain is expected to move slowly today while intensifying a little further into Wednesday.

Moist north-easterly winds are also expected to continue to extend into south-eastern Queensland until Thursday.

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

  • Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
  • Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

For emergency assistance, contact the SES on 132 500.
