I DON'T like it, not one little bit.
I'm talking about my new bank card, with the marvellous PayWave facility.
My bank says it is going to make my life a whole lot easier and get rid of the need to carry cash.
All I have to do is flash the card and the transaction is deducted off my account - no signature, no pin code, nothing ... if it's less than $100.
I don't like this.
I don't want it and yet there seems to be nothing I can do to change it.
I telephoned my bank saying "thanks for the new card, but can I have my old one back?"
The answer was "no".
This is the future and I have to come on board.
The subtle message is, unless you spend more than $100, it's an inconsequential amount.
And yes, I know the bank says they "guarantee" against fraud.
I'm not sure how.
I also don't like the way my supermarket is subtly forcing me to use automatic check-outs instead of a person.
Short queues were something major retailers used to pride themselves on.
Now it seems they are making the queues by hiring fewer staff so impatient people, like me, will choose the fast, convenient people-less check-outs.
Am I the only one who sees the danger in all this contact-less technology?
I'm not talking end of the world stuff, although I'm sure many people can see the analogy between a cashless society and the road to Armageddon.
I'm talking about the future of thousands of jobs replaced by thankless machines.
Why are we sitting quietly by and allowing the automated takeover?
I said to the manager of the store the other day, "I like to be served by a person, thank you."
She said "we will always have automatic check-outs in the shop".
For now we will.
But already the retail giants are encouraging me not to get off my lazy butt and do all my shopping online.
I can do it all from my not-so-smart phone.
Again, can't people see how we are selling ourselves short of jobs?
ANZ has plans to ditch 1000 people this year.
Are these the people who would have been there to help me when I went to the teller to draw the cash I now no longer need because I can wave my money goodbye?
What annoys me most is the lack of consultation.
My smart new card simply arrived with no forewarning, no "would you like this?", it was there.
Is this what it was like when credit cards were introduced?
Am I just suffering from my first onset of middle-aged-paranoia-for-all-things-new?
Or should we all be concerned about our future and the jobs that simply no longer will need to be there?
