A TRUCK driver is dead and another is in hospital after two semi-trailers crashed on the Hume Highway near Tarcutta, in south-west New South Wales, early this morning.
Inspector Peter McLay from the Wagga Wagga Local Area Command said just after 2:30am a northbound truck left the road, collided with a guard rail and crashed into a creek bed.
"It appears that an axle from the prime mover of that particular truck has separated and another truck travelling northbound behind the first truck has then collided with that axle," he said.
He said the second truck then lost control and landed on its side and completely blocking both northbound lanes.
One of the truck drivers died in the smash and the other was taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital.
The highway was expected to re-open this afternoon, diversions in place via the Tumbarumba Rd and the Sturt Hwy added 40 minutes to the journey.
