BEING the young pup of the competition proved costly for Matt Howell.
The 18-year-old uni student from Victoria was eliminated from MasterChef tonight after commiting one of the biggest no-no's of the reality cooking show - serving undercooked meat.
Howell found himself cooking for his spot in the competition after losing a tagine taste test along with Deb Sederlan, Andrew Strickland, Emma O'Shaughnessy and Filippo Silvestro.
In the second round, Howell chose to cook lamb cutlets, which would prove to be his undoing.
"It just all seemed to very quickly get away from me," he said.
"I did have this plan of what I wanted to do in mind and I thought that I could just set and forget some of my elements such as my garlic puree.
"I was trying to focus on too many things at once."
Howell's undercooked lamb and failure to get all five elements on the plate meant he was the third amateur cook eliminated from the Top 24.
"Even when things didn't go my way it was still fun to be there in my favourite TV show," he said.
Back at university and his part-time job at a fast-food outlet, Howell hopes to broaden his knowledge and skills over the next few years with work experience.
"I'm really young and I've got this degree to finish, so I don't want to do anything that's too rash because I wasn't ready for it."
MasterChef Australia continues tomorrow night with another MasterClass.
Gary Mehigan and Matt Moran teach the Top 21 contestants about raw foods, herbs, and oils.
Then, Mehigan whips up a mushroom gnocchi and his mum's lamb stew with dumplings.
MasterChef airs Sundays at 7.30pm and week days at 7pm on Ten.
