MANY years of relentless campaigning at StarTrack by TWU members, delegates and organisers has secured some of the very best wages, conditions and safety standards in the transport industry.
Our strength in the yards means that we don't have to beg for a fair go or respect from the boss; we're given it as a right.
We're going to need this strength as we begin negotiations for a new enterprise agreement covering employee drivers across New South Wales and the ACT.
The merger with Australia Post means it won't be an easy task to secure a deal that provides real wage and superannuation increases and builds on our existing conditions, job security clauses and safety standards.
But winning for our members is what the TWU is all about. Just before Christmas we secured a top-drawer agreement for all subbies who work under the StarTrack NSW banner.
Our delegate team - Jasen Benson, Shane Moffat, Steve Campbell, Garry Russell and Scott McPherson - ran a brilliant campaign, using their decades of industry experience to get a fair piece of the pie for subbies.
This new agreement ensures subbies are in control of their own businesses and that all costs are covered. They have also gained a picnic day, delegate's leave and a number of power-building clauses.
All subbies in NSW that work under the StarTrack banner will get moved across to the new agreement, and so will future StarTrack subbies that will work out of the soon-to-be opened Botany warehouse. Negotiations for our employee drivers at StarTrack began last week and our member-led negotiation team is confident we can secure another strong deal.
Head delegate for StarTrack Minchinbury, Jasen Benson, said he consulted with delegates from yards across NSW and the ACT and members were up for the challenge.
"Managers have never given us a fair deal out of the goodness of their hearts. We've had to earn it through tough negotiations and standing together as part of the TWU," Jasen said.
I'm looking forward to standing side by side with Jasen and all our delegates and members as we fight for a top-class new Star Track EA.
