FREIGHT will be able to keep moving during times of natural disaster under a Newman LNP Government plan to provide an inland alternative to the Bruce Hwy in Queensland.

Premier Campbell Newman said the LNP had a strong plan to deliver better regional roads and would upgrade four major highways so regional communities remain connected all year round.

"While we are working closely with the Federal Government to upgrade the Bruce Hwy after years of Labor neglect, another route is vital for families and freight when the highway is cut along the coast," he said.

"That's why a re-elected Newman LNP Government will deliver upgrades to the Gregory Developmental Rd, Gregory, Burnett and New England highways, creating jobs in regional communities and securing a new safe year-round travel option.

"These projects will ensure crucial freight and emergency assistance can be delivered when the Bruce Hwy is cut off due to flooding or a natural disaster strikes.

"Better regional roads mean more local jobs for regional Queenslanders and safer journeys for families."

Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said only the LNP had a plan to deliver crucial safety, flood mitigation and capacity works for an inland highway providing a viable Bruce Highway alternative.

"In recent years, Emerald has become one of the most flood affected communities in Queensland, which is why the first package of works will be targeted at Retreat, Theresa and Abor Creeks," Mr Seeney said.

"We will also be improving a section of the Burnett Hwy, south-west of Rockhampton, with strengthening, widening and bridge replacement works.

"Future works will look at sections north and south of Charters Towers, which make up the Gregory Developmental Rd.

"Our $375 million package of works is a plan only the LNP can deliver and afford because we've made the strong choices to reduce debt and free up funds for job-creating infrastructure.

"Only the LNP has a strong plan to build better roads for rural and regional communities."

The regional and road upgrades a re-elected LNP Newman Government will deliver include:

  • Gregory Highway Retreat and Theresa Creek flood upgrades
  • Gregory Highway Abor Creek flood upgrade
  • Burnett Highway pavement widening
  • Gregory Developmental Road pavement widening
  • Gregory Developmental Road Cape River Bridge upgrade
  • Burnett Highway bridge and culvert replacement
  • New England, D'Aguilar, Isis and Wide Bay flood mitigation works
