A little blue in this Maroon

ENGLISHMAN Derek Pitman named his daughter after the football team he supported - Chelsea.

He will never get to see her play at London's Stamford Bridge, the home of his beloved blues.

However, he will get to cheer her on in his home city of Sydney on Sunday, although his 23-year-old daughter won't be playing for the home team.

Chelsea, who was born in Sydney, will be wearing the maroon of the Queensland Firebirds in the showdown against the Sydney Swifts.

A 12-time Australian representative, Chelsea said she had no doubt who her father would be supporting - the Firebirds.

"Dad loves it that I'm playing up here," she laughed. "He's always supported the Broncos, and Queensland when it comes to State-of-Origin, so having his daughter play for a Queensland team suits him down to the ground."

But it won't only be her family and friends who will give Chelsea a warm reception when she steps out on court for the defending premiers.

Chelsea spent two seasons playing for the Swifts and she knows her old teammates will make life tough on Sunday.

"It will be like State-of-Origin - it will be mate against mate for sure," she said.

"Netball at this level is just as intense as any sporting clash between Queensland and NSW."

The Firebirds won their first game of the season after beating the Central Pulse 58-32 in round three last Sunday but Chelsea said the end result was deceiving.

"There is still plenty of room for improvement," she said.
